Edwin Godfrey Rivett:

Edwin Godfey Rivett was born in Umballa, India, on 1 October 1869. In civilian life, he was employed by a firm of coach builders and boot and saddle manufacturers. At the baptism of his youngest child in 1910 he was described as a merchant.

A long standing member of the Volunteers, he served in the ranks of the 2nd Punjab Volunteer Rifles at Simla, April 1882-March 1887; the North Western Railway Volunteer Rifles, at Umballa, February 1893-March 1895, and then in the Punjab Light Horse. He was granted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Punjab Light Horse on 7 June 1901 and was promoted to Captain in June 1903. He was placed on the Supernumerary List in January 1913. He was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal, notified in I.A.O. 493 of May 1917. He was appointed a Substantive Lieutenant in the I.A.R.O. on 16 October 1916 and was attached to the Supply and Transport Corps. For most of the war he was employed as a Supply Officer at Umballa and the Simla Hills. During 1919 he was Brigade Supply Officer of the 58th Brigade Supply Section serving at Umballa, Kasauli and Kchat. Rivett was promoted Captain in the I.A.R.O. in October 1919 and was released from military service on 31 March 1920.

Edwin Godfrey Rivett was the middle child of seven born to Joseph Henry Rivett (1830-1918) and Elizabeth Mary Webster (1848-1923). Joseph was born and raised in Southwark, London; Elizabeth born in India. They were married in Lucknow, Bengal in 1864.
