John
John was born in South Shields, Co. Durham in 1955. His father's family were part of the Shetland community that had come south to find work on the River Tyne. His maternal grandmother was part of the Tinmouth family who were Tyne river pilots, reputedly the oldest such family. His maternal grandfather's family had origins in the borders, Norfolk and Kent.
Mary
Mary was born in Beckenham, Kent in 1948. Her McIntosh ancestors origins were in Inverness but they came south via Hull, Yorkshire. Her paternal grandmother was also Scottish, being born in Edinburgh. Her maternal grandfather's family were based in Gloucesteshire whilst her maternal grandmother was born in Reigate, Surrey.
About this site
This site has been created by John to make available to family members what he has found in his research into his and Mary's family history. Much of the information has been based on the work of others, namely his maternal aunt, Joan Stuart (nee Potts) on the Tinmouth and Wetherells; his third cousin, Marilyn Pope on the Leasks and Shetland life in general; with Mary's mother and brother, Ruth and Peter, providing the basis for her family trees. I'm also grateful to Alan Potts, my mother's cousin, for information on his grandfather, John Dryden Potts and his printing business.
The information is stored in a geneaology software system called GRAMPS (https://gramps-project.org/blog/). This allows the systematic recording of all the information that is found during family history research, including copies of source documents such as birth certificates or wills. It also allows a number of 'reports' to be produced, which includes web pages, allowing the information to be explored dynamically. Each family has a 'dynamic' web page and a 'narrative' web page. The Gaelic name for the clan is Mhic an Tòisich meaning "Son of the Chief". The clan was based around Inverness.
The clan crest is a wildcat.
