Sally Lyon Hilken (1845-1938) and Donald McIntosh (1844-1918)
Donald and Sally are Mary's great grandparents. Donald was the second of seven children, two of whom died in infancy. Both were born and baptised in Hull, Yorkshire; they married in Hull on 30 September 1873 and also had seven children, two of whom also died in infancy. Although further work is required, it appears that Donald's merchant business needed frequent trips to Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and some of their children, including Allan Douglas, Mary's grandfather, were born there.
At some point before the 1891 census, the family moved to 46 Tyrwhitt Road, St Paul, Deptford, London, where Donald became an "agent for foreign manufacturers". By 1901 Donald's mother Catherine had joined them in London.
Sally's father was born in Hull and ran a decorating business. Her grandfather was an inn-keeper in Hull and was born "in foreign parts" according to the 1841 census, which may have been Heligoland.
